Little India overview

Little India Travel Guide
West of the Singapore River and just north of the Colonial District lies the heart of city’s Indian community. Located predominantly along Serangoon Road, Little India is where immigrants once raised cattle and created a thriving trade centre and a cultural haven for those from the sub-continent. Strolling along the pretty streets of the neighbourhood will bring you up close and personal with numerous, often overpowering, curry houses in addition to the obligatory shopping malls and shophouses. Though not as touristed as many other areas, Little India is still attractive to those wishing to see the preservation of traditional cottage industries and commerce - clothing and food are the best-sellers. Local families congregate on the streets on Sundays, making this a colourful and vibrant time to visit, with excellent people watching. A good option for the more budget conscious traveller, the dining and accommodation bargains are a rarity in Singapore.
